ARTEFACTS FROM THE GREATER ASIA CO-PROSPERITY SPHERE

Artefacts from The Greater Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere opens tonight, Wednesday July 4th, from 6-8pm at Artereal Gallery.

The Greater Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere is a collaboration between Perth-based artists Abdul Abdullah, Casey Ayres and Nathan Beard. In response to their Asian-Australian heritages, the artists recently created an embassy for a fictional pan-Asian empire. Part of Melbourne's Next Wave Festival, and located at the NGV Studio, this Oriental embassy was the setting for a cultural program of live events, where various Eastern and Western influences were brought together and confused. As ambassadors for this faux-embassy, the artists investigated how multiculturalism operates in contemporary Australian society with humour, and personal reflections on how the work mirrors their own hybrid cultural experiences as Asian-Australians.

Artefacts from The Greater Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere will be showing at Artereal Gallery from 4-28 July 2012.
