Australian artist Shoufay Derz's video work, 'Depart without return (pt.2)' is currently showcased in the Video Platform '15, which has opened at Art Stage Singapore 2015, between 22-25 January 2015.
The program of 51 single-channel video works, shown across 8 screens, has been curated by Australian gallerist Paul Greenaway OAM, director of Adelaide's Greenaway Art Gallery.
Speaking with Blouin Artinfo, Greenaway commented, "Video Platform '15 follows no other premise than to allow a platform to survey what is currently happening, predominantly through younger artists working in the medium of video. We will find nonetheless that several of them converge in the complex field of 'human condition' as an area of exploration."
Speaking about the Depart without return series, Shoufay Derz commented, "“The Depart without return series is a personal reflection on death and the meaning of emptiness. The elegiac photographs are both a lament on the transience of life and a celebration of its mystery. Intensely process-driven, elemental and alchemical, this work harnesses the life cycle of silk moths and pure indigo pigment. Derz is interested in how absence is articulated through marks of presence and how the visual artist uses the known to depict the unknown just as the writer uses words to express the ineffable.”
Shoufay Derz work joins those by a host of international artists including Santiago Sierra (Spain), Jun Nguyen Hatsushiba (Japan/Vietnam), Ivan Navarro (Chile), Angela Tiatia (Samoa), Hiroko Okada (Japan), Martin Lorenzo de Mesa (Philippines) and Shambhavi Kaul (India).
Art Stage Singapore is at Marina Bay Sands from January 22-25 2015.
