Currently showing at the Queensland University of Technology Art Museum (QUT), Foundation's Edge: artists and technology presents artists who, rather than adhering to the intended use of technological devices, push them to realise their potential as an art medium.

Running from 15 March - 26 May 2013, the group exhibition features nine uranium chandeliers by Ken + Julia Yonetani. The chandeliers are part of the Crystal Palace: The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nuclear Nations series, in which the glowing installation of unique chandeliers are in response to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster of 2011.

It is a given that the time will come when supply will no longer meet demand, and that the fossil fuel model of energy production is—as the term suggests—a fossil. With a total of thirty-one chandeliers expected to be created for the series, fifteen were exhibited in a solo exhibition at Artereal Gallery in October-November 2012. To read more about the series, click here.

In the lead up to their exhibition Crystal Palace: The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nuclear Nations, which opens at Artereal Gallery on 3 October, Das Platforms recently interviewed Ken + Julia Yonetani aboutt their current exhibition What The Birds Knew which runs until 3 November 2012 at 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Sydney.

In this interview the artists discuss social and cultural education, the ‘green ant dreaming’ from the same region as the infamous Nabarlek Uranium mine in Australia’s Northern Territory, changing attitudes to nuclear power and the recent Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.
