Artist Interview with Kevin Chin...

Kevin Chin, Little Pieces (Orange Wagon),
2009, Oil on canvas, 67 x 84 cm

What inspires you and where do the ideas for your work come from?

The paintings in the Artereal exhibition use images with an implicit coding. They're chopped up, repositioned, and recontextualised. They find their own logic by renegotiating the canvas plane.

The ideas come from the images themselves and what they want to become.

What is it that you are trying to achieve with the works in this exhibition? What message or ideas, if any, are you are trying to convey?

These paintings play with how scenes are assembled and how objects find their own meaning.

Why do you make art?

To find out what things are and what they want to become.

Kevin Chin is a Melbourne based artist and a recent finalist in the 2010 Metro Art Prize. In previous years Kevin has also been a finalist in the RBS Emerging Art Prize. His work can currently be seen at Artereal as part of our group exhibition +/- (Positive / Negative) which runs until the 31st October, 2010.
