A huge congratulations to Shoufay Derz, who was recently awarded a significant grant by the Australia Council for the Arts.

Shoufay, who is currently in regional NSW where she is undertaking the Hill End Artist in Residence Program, received the grant as part of the $9.1 million of investment in Australian arts through the first round of Australia Council's new grant model.

The $9.1 million investment includes $4.6 million to arts organisations, $3.1 million to individual artists and $1.4 million to groups. 

The artist's work will be included in Artereal Gallery's stand at Sydney Contemporary 15 and is scheduled to have a solo exhibition of new work at Artereal Gallery from mid November. 

KEN + JULIA YONETANI / ZK/U BERLIN OPEN STUDIO

Ken + Julia Yonetani are currently in Germany undertaking an artist residency at ZK/U Berlin.

They have been working on completing their Crystal Palace: The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nuclear Nations series of uranium chandeliers, in which there will be 31 in total to represent the countries which currently operate nuclear power stations.

ZK/U will be hosting an open studio next week on Friday 25 July 2013, allowing members of the public an insight into the works the artists have created during their residence. Ken + Julia will have their newest completed uranium chandeliers for display, before all 31 works are shown at the Singapore Biennale from October 2013 - February 2014.

CLAUDE JONES / ARTIST RESIDENCY IN THE NETHERLANDS

Claude Jones is currently undertaking a 3 month ceramic residency in Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. 

During the month of March, Claude was invited to exhibit at Artunit, a gallery in Harrlem, near Amsterdam. Her show 'Anthropocentrap' features new sculptural pieces, which are her first completed works during the residency.

"Anthropocen-trap combines the words “anthropocentric” and “trap” to suggest the human-centric perspective that both defines and ultimately limits the way that animals are predominantly perceived. 

In these sculptures, a cage and corset-like body, connects animal and human.  For me the, "cage" – or "coop" is symbolic of both literal entrapment, but also the metaphoric restraint of an historic and enduring anthropocentrism that inhibits us from questioning the ethics of our contradictory relationship with other animals." - Claude Jones, artist statement

From 28 March - 19 April 2013, Claude will also exhibiting a solo show at NOPX, a gallery space in Turin, Italy. Her show 'Rabbit Run, Run!' will feature mixed media works on paper.

CLAUDE JONES / ARTIST NEWS

Claude Jones has embarked on a 12 month project combining overseas research, artist residencies, conferences and exhibitions with a focus on learning and developing new skills, evolving and expanding her visual arts practice, researching art and exhibition opportunities and connecting with international peers, mentors and curators.

From October - December 2012, Claude will undertake a sculpture residency at The Fundacion Gruber Jez in Merida, Mexico, where she will work with mastor sculptor, Mariacarmen Castaner to learn techniques in producing moulds for complex sculptural forms and to cast objects using a variety of resins and metals. Merida, the capital of Yucatan, is rich with Mayan influence and artefacts. Claude is particularly interested in the pictorial and hieroglyphic imagery of Mayan ceramic painting, the flat and stylized depiction of narrative scenes and the use of repetitive motif to imply context. "To date, I have applied patterned fabrics, decorative papers and collaged prints to the surface of my sculptures. The direct application of painted and richly detailed narrative imagery will add layers of complexity and meaning to my work." 

From January - April 2013, Claude will undertake a ceramics residency at Sunday Morining@ekwc, a professional work-centre located in Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands that provides studios, workshops and technical assistance for artists, designers and architects from around the world to realise their projects in ceramics. Here she will learn skills in ceramic modelling, mould making and casting techniques and develop prototypes for an ambitious new installation work titled "Target Practice" which is scheduled for exhibition at Sculpture in The Vineyards, Hunter Valley, NSW and here at Artereal in Sydney in 2013. 

Claude will have her first solo exhibition in Europe in February 2013 at Nopx Gallery in Turin, Italy. 

She will also exhibit in a group show in Reatre Gallery in Vienna in May 2013 as one of 5 winners of the Its Liquid International Art Prize.

Claude will return to Sydney in June 2013 to complete her ceramic installation project in the ceramics studio at Sydney college of the Arts in Rozelle.

After the success of their recent exhibition Still Life: The Food Bowl at Artereal Gallery in Sydney, Ken + Julia Yonetani are currently exhibiting their recent body of salt works as part of Palimpsest #8: Collaborators and Saboteurs.

This opportunity to exhibit Still Life: The Food Bowl in Mildura is particularly poignant and relevant for both the artists and local community, given that in 2010 the artists completed a Synapse art-science residency awarded by the Australian Network for Art & Technology (ANAT) which resulted in a three month collaboration on location in Mildura, with scientists at the Murray Darling Freshwater Research Centre and Sunrise 21. Still life: The Food Bowl is the resulting body of work. It is made entirely from groundwater salt that as part of salt interception schemes has been pumped out of the ground around the Murray-Darling in an effort to try and reduce salinity in the river system.

On the international stage, Ken + Julia Yonetani have just opened their new exhibition Sense of Taste at GV Art in London. The exhibition which opens on 6 October and runs until 22 November will, for the first time, show the artist’s recent salt work alongside their sugar series Sweet Barrier Reef (previously exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2009).

Following their exhibition in London, Ken + Julia will then spend two months in Finland as part of an artist residency awarded by the Kone Foundation before travelling to Portugal in early 2012 as part of an Inter-Arts Residency awarded by the Navegar Foundation.

On a local level, Ken + Julia will be exhibiting in a number of upcoming regional and institutional exhibitions over the next twelve months including Ultrabuddha at Glasshouse Regional Gallery Port Macquarie from 7 October - 4 December 2011; Arboreal at Macquarie University Art Gallery in Sydney from 26 October - 15 December 2011; 2112 Imagining the Future at RMIT Gallery in Melbourne from 2 December 2011 – 28 January 2012 and That’s not how you make porridge, a group exhibition at Goulburn Regional Art Gallery to be held from 7 December 2011 – 14 January 2012.

Ken + Julia Yonetani are also current finalists in the 2011 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize which will be announced on 21 October 2011.

The Motel Sisters tour Europe...

The Motel Sisters, Paris and Tacky Motel, are a performance duo that parody popular culture, suburbia and contemporary art. The characters are loosely based on over-media-saturated socialites such as Paris Hilton. Mixed with this pink-clad celebrity stereotype are the qualities of the aspiring suburban teen, including the influence of consumer fashion trends, identity angst and the superficial unrequited desire to be famous. The Motel Sisters have undertaken guerilla television appearances on Australian daytime tv shows, and also utilise aspects of interactive websites in their art-making. For instance, they present video art online on YouTube and cheekily experiment with Chatroulette. The Sisters endlessly self-promote using the ultimate self-promotion tool, the internet - in order to push the boundaries of performance art in a digital age.

In July 2011 the Motel Sisters will be in Europe presenting their European and Australian Contemporary Art and Performance forum. This will explore examples of cultural attributes prominent in various European art communities alongside Australian examples. With a particular focus on performance art this forum will be a lively discussion about contemporary performance and art in the digital age and how it can be utilised to boost artistic endeavours. The Motel Sisters podcast, ‘Popaganda’, will document the forum. This will be an exciting and interactive live performance and multimedia event; encompassing local, international and global perspectives.
