LIAM BENSON // Selected for inclusion in Over View Travelling International Festival of Video Art

Sydney-based inter-disciplinary artist, Liam Benson, has been selected for inclusion in the inaugural Over View Travelling International Festival of Video Art, a film and video art project initiated in the Netherlands. 

Presented by dLux Media Arts and UNSW, Over View is curated by dLux Media Arts’ Sarah Vanderpeer and opens Friday 6 November at UNSW Galleries. 

The Sydney instalment of Over View includes the work of Liam Benson, Julia Davis, John A. Douglas, Nikki Lam, Tony Lawrence, Nicola Walkerden and Liam O’Brien. 

During August 2014, Over View previewed internationally at the Open Air Festival De Kaaij in the Netherlands as a compendium of global visions by video artists from eight participating countries.

Congratulations to London-based, Australian artist Jess MacNeil, who has been selected as one of twelve video artists to showcase their artworks as part of a new partnership between Sydney Contemporary and Sydney Film Festival.

The exhibition is the result of Sydney Film Festival and Sydney Contemporary coming together to “showcase a variety of the most interesting moving image artworks”, according to Barry Keldoulis, Director of Sydney Contemporary.

Jess MacNeil joins other internationally renowned video artists including Josh Azzarella, Heath Franco, David Capra, Deborah Kelly, Christian J Heinrich, Baden Pailthorpe, Cameron Robbins, Juan Pablo Langlois and Nicolas Superby, Joan Ross, Allison Schulnik and Grant Stevens

The works will be hosted at The Hub at Sydney’s Town Hall and will run from 3 – 14 June 2015.

LIAM BENSON // 'Mrs Boss slays the malevolent scoundrel' on show at Australian Centre for Photography

 

Artereal Gallery Artist, Liam Benson, has been invited to exhibit at The Australian Centre for Photography as part of its Street Screen program for 2015. Opening the evening of Friday 30 January and on display until 26 February 2015, the video artwork can be viewed via projection from the street after dark.

In the work, entitled 'Mrs Boss slays the malevolent scoundrel', Liam Benson is Mrs Boss, a gun-toting colonial hunter and bearded lady, who travels through the golden fields and pale bushland of the Monaro landscape in hot pursuit of her target. Successful in her mission, Benson portrays the commonly mocked bearded-lady as a hero, inverting the stereotype.

Artereal Gallery will present a solo exhibition from Liam Benson from 4 March 2015 as part of Art Month Sydney 2015.  Entitled Noble Savage, the new body of work continues the artist's preoccupation with stereotypes, this time examining the romanticized white Australian male archetype from the view of a 'privileged white male of Anglo-Celtic heritage with a queer awareness', acknowledging the dialogue shared between fellow immigrant and Aboriginal Australians about the incongruities and fundamentals of Australian identity.
