SVETLANA BAILEY // BOWNESS PHOTOGRAPHY PRIZE

                Svetlana Bailey_Utah_ 2015_from the series All dreams come true_pigment ink-jet print_114.0 x 91.0 cm

Artereal Gallery congratulates Svetlana Bailey who was selected as one of 47 finalists for The Bowness Photography Prize 2015.

Established in 2006 to promote excellence in photography, the annual non-acquisitive William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize is an initiative of the MGA Foundation. The Bowness Photography Prize has quickly become Australia's most coveted photography prize. It is also one of the country's most open prizes for photography. In the past, finalists have included established and emerging photographers, art and commercial photographers.

Svetlana works with images or artifacts that I find, such as on walls, billboards or shop window displays. They present an alternative reality, and I photograph them with their surroundings, and flatten these two spaces into one. Often the images I find are a montage, creating a reality that never truly existed. I collect them into a personal global album of images created by strangers in response to a common dream. Perhaps their makers considered place and interpreted its environment and beliefs, or were trying to shape our perception of reality. I wonder if these images exist for us or against us, if they beautify our life or mislead us, and if believing in their deception adds to our satisfaction.

This year marks the 10th edition of the William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize. On Thursday 1 October the winner will be announced as the $25,000 winner of the William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize.

SVETLANA BAILEY // part of group exhibition at Rhode Island School of Design

Image: Svetlana Bailey, 10-01, 2010, type c print, edition of 8, 120 x 120cm

Artereal Gallery artist Svetlana Bailey will exhibit eight new artworks as part of a group exhibition at Rhode Island School of Design, joining eight other artists; Pamela Chavez, Elizabeth Goodspeed, Sakura Kelley, Madison Kim, Hiro Nagaoka, Lily Siegel, Zharia Shinn & Nafis White.

The show, which opened 19 March, seeks to address notions of identity, culture, history, tradition and belonging.

Svetlana’s work is concerned with misplacement and longing to belong, and her images investigate the insecurity of our experience within the landscape. She explores the phenomenon of fog as a portal to experiencing the transitory quality of our surroundings. She seeks out locations of dense fog world-wide. Having researched and selected an area she can wait around for days for the appropriate atmospheric conditions and effect and ideal photographic opportunity.

Of the eight artworks selected for this exhibition, Svetlana commented; "Presented is a collection of globally significant constructions. Normally displaced across the earth, they are assembled on one wall to be considered as a single phenomenon, perhaps in a similar way to that envisaged by the original builders of Beijing's World Park. What are objects of private memories for millions of co-witnesses, are replicated, eliminating the physical impediments to experiencing their true wonder."

'MIRAGE' BY SVETLANA BAILEY

13/11, 2013, c-type print, 120x150cm, edition of 8.

Svetlana Bailey is currently exhibiting her photographic work entitled 'Mirage' at the Queensland Centre of Photography. The work will be on display until October 20th 2013, bringing with it an investigation of the paradoxical desire for freedom and belonging by examining empty interiors and vast, somewhat other-worldly landscapes.

The interiors were photographed during the artists recent residency in Chongqing, China and are that of the studio in which Svetlana Baily worked with artist Li Junyi to study the medium of the 19th century process of daquerreotype photography. The subject of  interiors and the process of the daguerreotype is linked by the intimacy one experiences within their surroundings and the intimacy that the viewing of a daguerreotype demands, as one traditionally holds it in their hands, touching it and looking closely at the image to see the fine negative and positive details. However, this intimacy is contradicted by the artist as she enlarges the daquerreotypes, changing the way we see the image and revealing the imperfections of the hand made process. The silence of the interiors are combined with large colour prints of Chongqing's fog-encased landscapes, forming a relationship of  limitlessness and fragile environments. The artist considers one's experience of the surroundings and the interaction between the inner experience and external environment.

Svetlana Bailey is also currently exhibiting 'Mirage' at Artereal Gallery until October 26th, acting as her second solo exhibition with the gallery.

Come along to Artereal Gallery this Saturday 19th at 3pm for Svetlana Bailey's artist talk where she will discuss and answer questions on her current work. The talk is free and all are welcome.

First exhibitions for 2012: Svetlana Bailey and Annamarie Dzendrowskyj....

Svetlana Bailey_10-17_2010_Type C print_edition of 8_100 x 100cm

First post of the year! We are back and Artereal Gallery has officially reopened after a blissful five week summer hiatus.

Our first exhibitions for 2012, two solo exhibitions of work by Svetlana Bailey and Annamarie Dzendrowskyj, opened on Wednesday evening. The exhibition has so far been a great success and very well received, with seven works selling prior to the exhibition opening!

It has become a tradition at Artereal Gallery in recent years to dedicate our February exhibition slot to emerging artists fresh out of art school and we have kept that tradition alive in 2012.

Svetlana Bailey has just graduated from COFA in Sydney and is recently returned from China having just completed a residency at Red Gate Gallery in Beijing. Her exhibition Fog is her first solo exhibition at Artereal Gallery and features recent works which investigate the insecurity of our experience within the landscape. Through her photographic images Svetlana explores the phenomenon of fog as a portal to experiencing the transitory quality of our surroundings.

Svetlana Bailey_10-01_2010_Type C print_edition of 8_120 x 120cm

In the process of creating her works, Svetlana seeks out locations of dense fog world-wide. Having researched and selected an area she can wait around for days for the appropriate atmospheric conditions and effect and the ideal photographic opportunity. The end result are her stunning images which capture the landscape covered in fog. This landscape is revealed as a place for introspection and a time for aloneness. In fog, objects become obscured and the horizon is blanketed or hidden, which stimulates ideas of boundlessness and the uncertainty of perception. Objects lose their finiteness of appearance, and we are reminded that the reality that surrounds us may not be as permanent or solid as we try to believe.

Annamarie Dzendrowskyj, another recent graduate, has just completed her Bacherlor of Fine Arts with Honours at the National Art School in Sydney. Her solo exhibition Dissolve features newly completed paintings of the Austrian landscape resulting from a recent artist residency in Austria.

Annamarie's work seeks to explore and paint that ambiguous ‘grey area’ between presence and absence in the atmospheric and haunting Austrian landscape. Her images evoke a kind of netherworld that conflates time, place, vision, and memory. An investigation into the indeterminate nature of ‘ways of seeing’ and ‘ways of being’, Annamarie's works could be metaphors for states of mind as much as they are specific sites. Her landscapes appear to simultaneously emerge and dissolve, whilst still retaining recognisable elements of imagery.

Both artists have managed to create hauntingly beautiful work that is both subtle and powerful.

Thank you to everyone who came along to the exhibition opening and made it such an enjoyable evening. If you have not yet been in to see these exhibitions, they will run until 3 March, so be sure to drop in...
