TULLY ARNOT // IS ANNOUNCED AS A FINALIST TO JOHN FRIES 2015, LAUNCHES POZIBLE CAMPAIGN AND A VIDEO INTERVIEW

Congratulations to Tully Arnot, who has been announced a finalist to the John Fries Award 2015, one of Australia and New Zealand's most covetable awards for emerging contemporary artists.

Tully Arnot is, indisputably, one of Australia's busiest practicing artists. Since picking up the Inaugural NAB Private Wealth Emerging Artist Award in association with Art Month Sydney in September, he has presented numerous solo exhibitions (including Trace Etc at Artereal gallery in March 2015) and group exhibitions. In March, he was also awarded the prestigious Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship, awarding the artist $20,000 over two years.  

As part of his solo exhibition, Trace Etc, at Artereal Gallery, Tully spoke In Conversation with Sydney Contemporary 15 Director, Barry Keldoulis and was also filmed providing further insight into the work in this exhibition from his studio at Redfern's 107 Projects (available to view above).

This week, Tully Arnot also launched a Pozible campaign in a bid to raise money for a project, Digital Forest, that he would like to get off the ground for Underbelly Arts 2015.

In his explanation on the crowdsourcing platform, Arnot elaborates on his intentions for the project: 

"Digital Forest is a new sculptural installation created for Underbelly Arts Festival 2015 on Cockatoo Island, Sydney. The artwork will consist of 300+ 'robotic' plants which use light sensors, servo motors and Arduino micro-controllers to create an interactive relationship between the audience and this electronic foliage.

This installation develops on a previous work Nervous Plants, winner of the 2014 NAB Private Wealth Emerging Artist Award. The new work will refine the technology that I developed in that work, as well as increase the complexity of the interactive components and greatly expand the scale of the work. "

Who are the Aussie artists on your radar for 2015?

Blouin Artinfo listed their top twelve and we are thrilled to see some familiar faces, including Tully Arnot, whose solo exhibition opens at Artereal Gallery this March as part of our Art Month Sydney program.

On Tully Arnot's work, Nicholas Forrest writes; "The Sydney-based artist is best known for investigating the intangible relationships we have with objects and illuminating new, poetic ways of interacting with the world around us. 2015 was a big year for Arnot who was announed the winner of the inaugural NAB Private Wealth Emerging Artist Award for his innovative work "Nervous Plant, 2014" which consists of an artificial plant animated by motors attached to the base of each branch. Artereal Gallery will present a solo exhibition of Arnot's work as part of Art Month Sydney's March 2015 program."

Among the other twelve listed include Artereal favourites Michael Staniak, whose body of work, Slow Pictures, was exhibited at Artereal Gallery in June 2014, and Ken & Julia Yonetani, who have shown several solo exhibitions at Artereal Gallery since 2011. 

Tully Arnot's solo exhibition opens at Artereal Gallery Wednesday 4 March 2015 at 6.00PM and runs until Saturday 28 March 2015. As part of Art Month Sydney, Artereal Gallery will join forces with dLux MediaArts on 21 March 2015 to bring Sydneysiders a mini festival in the Rozelle Contemporary Art Precinct. The festivities will kick off with a public talk between Tully Arnot and Art Fair Director, Barry Keldoulis, and will be followed by a series of other talks and an outdoor film screening of IS THIS ART?.

TULLY ARNOT WINS NAB PRIVATE WEALTH EMERGING ARTIST AWARD AHEAD OF SOLO EXHIBITION AT ARTEREAL FOR ART MONTH 2015

Tully Arnot, who was this week announced winner of the NAB Private Wealth Emerging Artist Award, will present a solo exhibition at Artereal Gallery as part of Art Month Sydney’s March 2015 programme.

Selected from over 300 emerging artists across Australia, Arnot was awarded the new, $10,000 acquisitive award on Wednesday, which seeks to recognise unrepresented artists in their first 10 years of practice.

“I’m stoked to be the winner of this year’s NAB Private Wealth Emerging Artist Award. As a young artist in Australia, it’s great to see an award recognising the many young artists working tirelessly across the country,” said Arnot.

As part of Art Month Sydney 2015, Tully Arnot’s exhibition at Artereal Gallery will showcase a new series of work that continues his exploration of the value of our relationships with non-sentient forms, and how these feed into our capacity to interact meaningfully with one another.

To bring this to life, Arnot will integrate complex technology with everyday or crass components – a merging of high and low thought that exemplifies the post-sentient nature of our increasingly connected, but ultimately disconnected world.

Arnot’s work is currently on display as part of the Finalists Exhibition at HASSELL Studio, Level 2, Pier 8/9, 23 Hickson Road, Walsh Bay Creative Precinct, Sydney. The exhibition is open to the public and will continue until Friday 20 September, 2014. The finalists include Julian Day, Mike Hewson, Katie Lee, Lisa Sammut, Camille Serisier, Bridget Walker and Jason Wing.

JASON WING @ ARTEREAL GALLERY

Sydney based artist Jason Wing has created this wonderful paste-up installation as part of Art Month Sydney 2012 and the launch of the Rozelle Contemporary Art Precinct.

Jason utilises iconography from his Chinese Aboriginal heritage combined with self portraiture.

The clouds when replicated are a symbol of everlasting happiness. The boy is Jason, the children are symbols of eternal happiness. His three eyes represent the past, present and future, while the circular arrow symbol on his chest can be interpreted as circles of life, continuing on.

Jason’s neon installations can be seen in Chinatown, Sydney and many other public venues around Australia.

Artist statement - Jason Wing

“My art is inspired by the way my life has thrown up apparent contradictions. It is the place between the contradictory energies that creates a unique space for me to carve out who I am as an artist and a man.

My fathers family is Cantonese. My mothers family is Aboriginal (Biripi people near Taree). She is very connected to the land around her and has little time for money and business. I grew up moving frequently between cities and suburbs and then back to nature and the country. Themes that reoccur in my work weave together elements from these influences: Nature and man, the urban environment and respect for nature, my cultural influences and a sense of positive universal spirituality. Two things in opposition can become the base of a pattern, this inspires the way I work the elements of patterns, evolution, chance and coincidence into my artwork.

Stencil technique allows me to work in a fluid yet precise way; it can be recurrent, instant and unique. Unknown Aboriginal artist 40,000 years ago used the stencil technique to document social and historical teachings. I use the same technique to mark my own contemporary beliefs and mixed heritage. Papunya dots connect back to my Aboriginal heritage while bold graphic imagery, wood and paper cutting techniques refer back to the Chinese part of me. The two parts come together and cross over with the colours I often use: red, black, white and gold.”

ART MONTH SYDNEY VIDEO INTERVIEW WITH GILES RYDER

Art Month Sydney recently sat down and interviewed Sydney based artist Giles Ryder about his own practice as well as his contribution towards Art Month Sydney 2012 via Northern Lights a group exhibition curated by Ryder at Artereal Gallery.

Join us tonight for the launch of the  Rozelle Contemporary Art Precinct as part of Art Month Sydney.

 

One of the highlights of the program will be a performance and installation entitled Spinning a Yarn by KnitPic (a.k.a Mrs Poly Mer and Mrs Poly Ester).

 

KnitPiC (Knit Plastics in Crises) presents Spinning a Yarn, an environmentally friendly, mobile installation and performance event that uses recycled materials, guerrilla knitting and alternative energy technologies to examine the science and emotion of climate change. Featuring an entire knitted marine landscape, Spinning a Yarn will be installed within the car park at Artereal Gallery from 5-8 pm.

 

The performances take place in a knitted marine environment that accommodates audience participants and two artists. The soft sculptural marine-scape created from recycled wool, re-imagined doilies, knitted plastic and videotape forms the underwater garden of Mrs Polly Mer and Mrs Polly Ester, the Plastic Bag Ladies of the Sea who are entwined in the knitted walls. The set has a quirky homemade feel and the audience is encouraged to interact with the hand-sewn landscape in which they find themselves. The use of low energy lighting adds to the show’s charm and intrigue.

 

The Plastic Bag Ladies of the Sea entertain their guests with puppetry, knitting, and story telling. They provide an intimate and interactive experience through which they draw attention to oceanic degradation and the threats pollution and plastic present to turtles and other marine life.

Artereal Gallery, dLux Media Arts, Sydney College of the Arts, The University of Sydney, and Paper Plane Gallery are proud to announce the official launch of the Rozelle Contemporary Art Precinct (RCAP).

Established in 2011 by a group of like-minded art organisations, the Rozelle Contemporary Art Precinct (RCAP) will present a series of events and exhibitions providing the general public with innovative and engaging contemporary art experiences in Rozelle, starting with an official launch party as part of Art Month Sydney on Friday 9 March, 5 to 8pm.

The RCAP program will highlight the rich and diverse contemporary art scene that exists in Rozelle. With a particular focus on both emerging artists and emerging artistic practices, the participating organisations have joined forces to present a broad range of cutting edge experimental art including street art, site specific installation and sculpture, performance, video and new media art (including virtual and digital works) alongside free public talks and forums.

The RCAP Launch Party will be a progressive event spread across participating venues along Darling Street, Rozelle, from 5 to 8pm on Friday 9 March, followed by drinks at the official Art Month Sydney bar at Artereal Gallery, 747 Darling Street Rozelle, from 8 to 10pm.

Highlights of the opening night include:

• The inaugural Artereal Gallery Project Space exhibition, featuring work by Sydney-based artist Charles Dennington.

• A site specific outdoor installation at Artereal Gallery by Jason Wing, featuring his most notable and iconic paste up motifs.

• Northern Lights, a group show curated by The Talent Agency, the curatorial persona of Sydney based artist Giles Ryder.

• Quest, an experimental performance work where members of the public are invited to participate in a 10 minute dialogue with artist Nola Diamantopoulos at the Artereal Gallery.

• Digital Lounge, a pop-up event by dLux MediaArts, featuring film, game and interactive multimedia works in an empty shop front at 703 Darling Street Rozelle, also coinciding with their 30th Anniversary celebrations.

• A performance by Toydeath who will be re-appropriating children’s electronic toys and wearing human-sized cartoonish costumes, creating a unique ‘stage show’ on the opening night.

• Fault Lines, a collection of works by Anna Madeline, made by re-interpreting diagrammatic imagery, on display at the Paper Plane Gallery.

• Visionarium 2012, a sound, video and performance exhibition by DeQuincey Co. in the SCA Research Gallery.

• Stilled Life, a solo exhibition by Sylvia Griffin in the SCA Graduate School Gallery, addressing emotional displacement, vulnerability and postmemory trauma.

• Spinning a Yarn, an intimate performance and installation event by KnitPic, featuring an entire knitted marine landscape installed within the car park at Artereal Gallery.

• Peloton presents at SCA, including: Boomer, an exploration of the space of painting by Miranda Parkes; Moving, a series of photocollages, animations and monoprints by Gail Kenning and Sue Pedley; and the Foreigness of Language, a self portrait and performance video piece by Nina Ross.

You might also be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the much loved cabaret performance artist, Renny Kodgers, during the RCAP Launch Party.

During Art Month Sydney, RCAP will also present a series of free artist and curator floor talks, outdoor installations, including seed, a new site specific sculpture created by Gary Deirmendjian and an Augmented Reality Sculpture walk and talk with Warren Armstrong, the brains behind Unseen Sculptures.

ARTEREAL GALLERY LAUNCHES NEW EXPERIMENTAL PROJECT SPACE WITH NEW CURATOR...

Artereal Gallery is excited to announce the launch of our new experimental Project Space!

Since opening in 2006, Artereal Gallery has been dedicated to presenting contemporary art which is both experiential and experimental. This new Project Space will allow Artereal Gallery to continue to do so, by giving the gallery a dedicated space for exhibiting cutting edge work by both emerging and established artists working across performance art, video, installation, sound based art and new media. With a particular focus on exhibiting the best up and coming emerging artists working with experimental practices – the Artereal Gallery Project Space will aim to show the ‘best of the next’.

The Project Space will be programmed by consultant curator Matt Glenn. Currently based in London, Matt will continue with his role as the Assistant Gallery Manager of the Serpentine Gallery whilst curating the Artereal Gallery Project Space. Matt is also a practicing artist and is represented in Sydney by James Dorahy Project Space.

For its inaugural exhibition, the Artereal Gallery Project Space will present a solo exhibition by Sydney artist Charles Dennington. Dennington’s work shifts between material devices in an exploration of object, artifact and representation. The artist’s drawings, photographs, sculptures and constellational arrangements bring about questions of nature and hierarchies - orders within conscious and unconscious judgment.

Charles Dennington is currently undertaking an MFA at Sydney College of the Arts. In 2010 he was included in No Right Turn, a contemporary drawing exhibition at Penrith Regional Gallery. In 2011 he collaborated with Tully Arnot on three split solo shows Bozo & Bozzetto at Gaffa Gallery, Double or Nothing at First Draft Gallery and Um Om at Rear View Gallery in Melbourne. Other solo exhibitions from 2011 include Face Like Figures, Floored at MOP Projects and Waste Models at DB Projects.

The Artereal Gallery Project Space will be launched in March 2012 to coincide with Art Month Sydney and the launch of the Rozelle Contemporary Art Precinct.

Art Month Sydney is officially upon us and as part of the month long contemporary arts festival Artereal is excited to present our March exhibition program. We hope you can join us on Thursday 10 March from 6-8pm for the opening of our Art Month exhibitions....

As part of Art Month Sydney, Ever, a series of photographs by New York based photo artist Simone Douglas will be showing in the main gallery from the 2 March - 2 April 2011.

The Ever series is an investigation of photography in relation to the sublime, excess, immateriality and the perceptual uncertainty of the photograph itself. Simone's images mark small events as potential acts of immensity. Crystalline cloudscapes and ice fissures form cryptic images of the forces of nature. The works are micro in scale yet macro in vision and concept. They play with the ambiguity of appearances and the contradiction between objective and subjective vision to explore the poetic dimension of photography.

As part of Art Month Sydney, Simone Douglas will be giving an artist's talk in the gallery on Saturday 12 March at 2.30pm.

Ken + Julia Yonetani_Ultrabuddha - that is why I want to be saved_2009

Also showing, during Art Month Sydney  (from the 2 March - 2 April 2011), Ken + Julia Yonetani will exhibit Ultrabuddha - that is why I want to be saved in the project space at Artereal Gallery. A ceramic and 23ct gold leaf sculpture will show alongside photographic images.

The ubiquitous Buddha statue, familiar as both a part of popular culture and of people’s quest for a healing power to ease the anxiety of contemporary living is linked by the Yonetani with Ultraman, the animated Japanese superhero.

The Yonetani’s creation, of Ultrabuddha is the incarnation of a complex contradiction; both embodying a spiritual quest for healing powers that may save ourselves and our planet, alongside the commercialisation and commodification of this quest within popular culture.

Participants decked in yellow hard hats carrying real and notional transparent sheets of glass focus attention on the neglected and overlooked heroes of the everyday; the fixers and makers that glaze windows , mend our taps, change our tyres…

 

Ken + Julia Yonetani join Artereal...

Artereal Gallery is very pleased to announce that renowned contemporary artists Ken and Julia Yonetani have joined the stable. Ken + Julia are currently collaborating on a new solo exhibition to be held at Artereal in June 2011. In addition, their Ultrabuddha will be exhibited at Artereal during Art Month Sydney in March 2011.

Ken + Julia Yonetani began collaborating in 2009 with Sweet Barrier Reef for the 21st century - Play Strauss's waltz grandly; an installation of photographs, DVD, performance, and coral shaped cakes on raked sugar bed at La Trobe University Museum of Art, Melbourne. This followed Ken’s collaboration with the Australian Institute of Marine Science, which resulted in the work Sweet Barrier Reef, being exhibited in a group show Once Removed, curated by Felicity Fenner for the Venice Biennale in 2009.

Ken + Julia Yonetani have since shifted their focus from the Great Barrier Reef to inland Australia and exchanged sugar for salt in a major project currently underway whilst undertaking an artist’s residency in Mildura, Victoria. This project is supported by ANAT (Australian Network for Art & Technology) SYNAPSE Grant and furthers their practice of collaborating with local scientists to produce meticulous works engaging with the fragility of the environment. Investigating salinity and water issues and the complex relationships between the native landscape and the irrigated food bowl, the work will be exhibited in the #8 Palimpsest 2011, Mildura and at Artereal Gallery, Rozelle, Sydney in June 2011.

Artereal Gallery is pleased to announce that we will be participating in Art Month Sydney 2011.

Following on from the success of the inaugural Art Month Sydney held in March 2010, the annual festival is set to return in 2011 with a month-long festival that celebrates the vibrancy and diversity of Sydney’s thriving contemporary visual arts scene.

As part of Art Month Artereal will show the work of New York based photo artist Simone Douglas. Her solo exhbition Ever will feature the artist's latest body of work. Ever is an investigation of photography in relation to the sublime, excess, immateriality and the perceptual uncertainty of the photograph itself. The images play with the ambiguity of appearances, utilising the contradiction between objective and subjective vision to explore the poetic aspect of photography.

Also planned for Art Month is a new work of participatory performance art, In silence and movement you can show the reflection of people, by internationally renowned intervention artist Sylvia Schwenk. Conceived especially for Art Month 2011 this work will draw attention to ordinary events and small, everyday acts and will take place at West Circular Quay in front of the MCA.
