GLEN HENDERSON / THE GREVILLEA VARIATIONS

Glen Henderson has been invited to screen her new media work The Grevillea Variations at Federation Square in Melbourne. A moving image artwork, The Grevillea Variations, provides an inventive colourful celebration of Australian Native Flora. The quirky, funny, and beautiful portraits of one of Australia's beloved native flowers is celebrated against her interpretative sculptural formations and surface patterning.

The Grevillea Variations present a spectacular visual journey. The inspiration is taken from the unique personalities of 18 different varieties of Grevillea, forming motifs on the botanical names - Kennedyana, Chrithmifolia, Paradoxa, Sericea, Thelemanniana, to name a few.

Many of the Grevillea blooms were photographed by Sandra Neale within Myall Park Botanic Garden, west of Brisbane in the Western Downs region. It has one of Australia’s oldest collections of arid and semi-arid native plants. Other photographs are from Brisbane and other areas within Eastern Australia.

The Sculptural forms, the abstractions and the surface patternings were inspired by Glen Henderson’s interest in nature’s geometry and created from various materials in response to the immense variety of Grevillea formations. Myall Park Botanic Garden, the inspiration of David Gordon Myall Park Botanic Garden the inspiration of David Gordon A.M. in the 1940’s, is a natural bush garden and a destination for botanists, gardeners, photographers, artists and bushwalkers.

The Grevillea Varations continues on The Big Screen at Federation Square in Melbourne until 13 September. In Sydney The Grevillea Varations can be seen on The Concourse Urban Screen in Chatswood until 31 October.

GLEN HENDERSON / THE LIGHTNESS MATRIX 3

The Lightness Matrix 3: GRANDE SEARCH forms part three of a three-part Parer Place Project developed as Artist in Residence at the Creative Industries Precinct of Queensland University of Technology.

"The Lightness Matrix 3: GRANDE SEARCH is introduced by a rocket journey to another planet.  Our Planet's recently restored scientific ambitions in outer space may have 'possible or impossible' goals.  Yet these adventures of my heroine's imagination, metaphors for life's journey, leave definite footprints in the cold hard surface of another planet." - Glen Henderson

From 12-30 September 2012, Glen Henderson's moving image work will be screened nightly at the Parer Place Outdoor Screen of QUT's Creative Industries Precinct.

For opening night and exhibition details, click here to view The Lightness Matrix Media Release.

GLEN HENDERSON SCREENING AT FEDERATION SQUARE

Throughout November, Glen Henderson's moving image work The Lightness Matrix 2: SPACE will be screening in Federation Square in Melbourne.

The Lightness Matrix 2 : SPACE is a solo exhibition of work developed for public screen by Glen Henderson. In a search for mastery of some kind at the risk of metaphorically crashing to the ground Henderson employs transitions reminiscent of puppet theatre. In introducing each scene, her characters are more like scaled up figurines than puppets as they command centre stage before flying off to sit within the props to watch. This unfolding story of selling one's soul for knowledge and skill ensues until the curtains are drawn to a close and the story unfolds again. A beautiful creative work.

Screenings will be at 5pm and 9.30pm every evening on the Plaza screen and 12.30pm each day on the Atrium screen. For further information on screening times click here.

The Lightness Matrix: Matrix 2

Glen Henderson presents part two of the The Lightness Matrix, a three-part Parer Place Project which was developed during her residency at the Creative Industries Precinct in 2010.

With space as its theme, Glen's second Matrix work harnesses the microscopic and organic patterns of Matrix 1 to explore the nature of spatiality in both its physical and spiritual guises.

Henderson employs transitions reminiscent of puppet theatre. Introducing each scene, her characters command centre stage before flying off to sit within the props to watch. This narrative ensues until the curtains are drawn to a close and the story unfolds again.

Glen Henderson has worked across medium with a continuing interest and involvement in contemporary practice developed independently and in collaboration with architectural, science and technology professionals. Her practice developed after completion of a Master of Fine Art at QUT in 1996. She has an extensive exhibition profile in Queensland and nationally and is represented internationally. Previous opportunities have included the QUT Creative Residency and a Artist Studio Residency at Queensland Art Gallery

Matrix 2: SPACE was developed in collaboration with Erik Griswold of Clocked Out who have recently won the 'Award for Excellence by an Organisation' at the APRL / AMC Art Music Awards in Sydney.
Screening from dusk until 9pm

Glen Henderson: The Lightness Matrix

Glen Henderson, Perceptions in Cell time B2, 2009

From the 24th November to the 5th December, Artereal artist Glen Henderson will transform the Parer Place Outdoor Screens of Queensland University of Technology’s Creative Industries Precinct into an expanse of colour and light from dusk every day.

The project is called The Lightness Matrix and has resulted from the Precinct's new artist-in-residency program of which Glen Henderson was the first artist to participate.

The Lightness Matrix unites, extends and melds Henderson’s persistent interests of over more than a decade of intense and prolific aesthetic practice. As the name ‘matrix’ implies, the artist charts and navigates across spatial planes as biomorphic forms coalesce with patterned, abstract formations and virtual images.

The Lightness Matrix as exhibited on the Parer Place Screens, is a vibrancy of colour and pattern as the magnified architectural and organic shapes resonate and expand. In this exhibition Henderson draws from an evolving study of long interest - spatial architecture and science. Viewers may observe a resurgence of codes and diagrams that inform her interdisciplinary practice.

‘As a maker of imagery I feel like a disjunctive poet bringing complex elements together and this work is an invitation to enter stage one of a space-time continuum,” Glen said.

From the smallest living organisms to designed and fabricated formations The Lightness Matrix looks at the way things are connected.

The Lightness Matrix also includes a sound component created in collaboration with sound construction group vOiCeArT.

Glen Henderson: 'The Lightness Matrix'

Installation shot: Glen Henderson, The Lightness Matrix, 2010

Glen Henderson will show The Lightness Matrix, a moving image work, at the Queensland University of Technology this November.

As the first person to be awarded the position of Creative Industries Artist in Residence, Glen Henderson's work can be seen at the Parer Place Screen nightly at dusk from the 19 November - 5 December 2010.

"The Lightness Matrix is a response to microscopic biological structures where all of the patterns are interrelated and the injection of each unexpected physical image reinterprets the space. From the smallest living organisms to designed and fabricated formations the lightness matrix looks at the way things are connected.

In this work, the connections that play out between the scientific, the architectural and the infusion of selected imagery may seem like leaps of the imagination. Yet the process of bringing this material together frame by frame transforms what might be read as disparate elements into a seamless language of idea." - Glen Henderson, 2010.

The Parer Place Screens provide experimental and innovative outdoor projections as part of QUT’s Creative Industries Faculty.
